Back pain has many symptoms and may be caused by something as simple as a minor injury to something as serious as cancer. Back pain is called dorsalgia in medical terms, but it’s unlikely you’ll hear that term much. Most people experience back pain at some point in their life and it is quite common.

Back pain is not a disease but rather a symptom. It indicates that there is a problem. The problem may be with the back muscles, nerves, or even the spine. The type of back pain you experience can vary greatly as can the location. Generally, the pain and location helps doctors determine the source of the pain. It is not uncommon for back pain to radiate to the arms, neck, or other parts of the body. The pain may be sharp or a dull ache and the area may have a fever and feel warm to the touch. Numbness and weakness may also result from back pain.

Back Pain Causes

Back pain causes are varied

The causes of back pain are varied and may indicate a passing problem or even a degenerative condition.

The following are different types of back pain:

Injury
Injuries like a slipped disc are a common source of back pain. Other back injuries may occur by lifting something that is too heavy.

Strain
A back strain is caused by suddenly moving in an awkward way, sitting/sleeping in an awkward position to long, bad posture, using the back muscles too much, and improperly lifting weights.

Degenerative Conditions
The bones and joints may be affected by conditions like osteoporosis and/or arthritis. The spine may be affected and cause back pain.

Psychological Problems
In some cases psychological problems can cause back pain. This includes stress and depression even if no real physical cause for the pain exists.
 
Other Causes
Back pain may result from cancer, infection, or other problems.

Home Remedies for Back Pain Relief
Different types of back pain are treated differently. The following home remedies should help you find some relief regardless of the cause.

- A massage may help work out the stress in your back and offer relief
- A hot bath can also help relax the back muscles and relieve your pain.
- A hot compress or ice pack, or even alternating between the two, can help ease the pain.
-Some say slices of raw potato placed on the painful area of the back can ease the pain.
