Edema

Edema home remedies and natural cures, Questions and Answers

Edema, sometimes referred to as oedema, is the fluid retention of body parts. When fluid accumulates in the cavities or cells of the body edema occurs. Most of the time it affects the feet and ankles, but other parts of the body may be affected. The risk of skin infection increases with edema and the healing process is slowed. It can also be quite painful. Edema is a symptom of an underlying problem, not a disease in itself.

Non-inflammatory swelling of body parts
Non-inflammatory swelling of body parts is the primary symptom of edema. When the swollen area is pressed it takes several seconds to return to normal.

Edema Causes

Edema has many causes. They may include kidney disease, heart failure, anaemia, thyroid disease, liver disease, starvation, malnutrition, weak veins, pregnancy, immobility, menstrual cycles, and the like. Edema may occur in healthy people at times and the body cures itself. Sometimes hot weather can cause edema. The abnormal accumulation of fluid in the body’s cavities can cause a tingling sensation. The main cause for pulmonary edema can be increased hydrostatic pressure. Pitting edema may be caused by reduced oncotic pressure.

Edema Remedies and Diet

Use mustard oil
Edema may be treated at home with mustard oil. Rub warm mustard oil on the affected area. You may also consider using apple cider vinegar to help rid the body of excess fluid.

Eat low carbohydrate diet
The body retains water with a high sodium diet, which is why it is important to avoid salt. Eating foods with low carbohydrates is also recommended.

Other Suggestions for Edema
Another suggestion for those suffering from edema is to exercise regularly. This will help your body get rid of excessive fluid. Don’t drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes. It also helps to rest with your legs elevated.
