The respiratory system is responsible of supplying oxygen to the body. Blood replenishes the oxygen it has distributed to the cells in the lungs. When we breathe, we inhale air through the mouth and nose, into the trachea, through the airways, and into the lungs. The lungs have terminals called the bronchi where the blood is replenished with fresh oxygen. When we exhale we liberate into the atmosphere carbon dioxide that has been taken from the blood in exchange for the oxygen in the lungs. This is basically the breathing process which keeps us alive. A continuous supply of air is absolutely necessary for our body to work properly and for all organs to perform their functions.
Asthma is a disease that narrows and sometimes, in severe cases, closes the airways. Asthma is a chronic disease; this means it is a long-term disease. It usually starts at an early age but due to specific circumstances can also develop in adults. The airways are delicate, extremely sensitive tubes which allow air in and out of the lungs, when they are irritated by foreign matters the muscles surrounding them press together and try to block the airway to avoid these foreign matters to get into the lungs. As the muscles press together and the airway narrows, mucus is produced inside of them to trap the foreign substance so it will not reach the lungs.
When a person has asthma, his airways are always swollen. They never have the opening and space that a non-asthmatic persons airways have. The airways of an asthmatic person react strongly and aggressively against certain foreign substances found in the air. Sometimes the irritation and reaction is mild and it will go away alone. Other times medication is required to open up the airways. In extreme cases, or asthma attacks the airways can be blocked completely and the person can experience respiratory failure which may lead to death.
The initial symptoms of an attack are shortness of breath, agitated chest movement, tightness of breath, and the person feels that he needs more air but can’t get it. When these symptoms start the person starts coughing and wheezing, you can hear a sort of whistling sound coming from his chest as the air tries to squeeze through the blocked passage. The cough is the body’s reaction to expelling the mucus liberated to trap the foreign object blocking the airway. The cough is also the lungs reaction to the lack of air and the need to open the airways to allow oxygen in and carbon dioxide out.
Most asthma attacks begin during the night or during the early morning hours. This is also the time when the cough gets worst. It is highly recommended that a person suffering an asthma attack does not lie down completely to sleep. He must remain in an almost sitting position that will not put pressure from the rest of the body, on the lungs and blocked airways. This is specially recommended for overweight asthmatics because in certain positions their belly can push up on the lungs and make breathing even harder.

Asthma is a disease caused by environmental and genetic factors. Genetic factors that make people prone to suffer from asthma are unavoidable; the disease is inherited to the parents. It may have been in the family for many, many years or it may have started with the great grandfather being allergic to a certain dust, or dog hair, or whatever that made him asthmatic and passing on the genes to the grandfather and so on. There is nothing that can be done to avoid or stop it.
Environmental causes are almost impossible to avoid. Smoke is in the air, flowers release their pollen into the air, and factories never stop polluting and so on and so forth. But there are environmental factors that we can avoid and these are key factors that will give you a better chance of escaping this disease. Smoking any type of tobacco is one of these factors; tobacco smoke thins and irritates the membranes of the air passages to your lungs. Smokers have less protection from allergens and if they do have asthma and their airways close, their lungs’ capacity for air is much less than that of a non-smoker of the same age and build. In a severe asthma attack it is highly probable that a smoker will lose consciousness before a non- smoker does because of his diminished lung capacity.
Overweight is another factor you can avoid. Overweight is another factor that can trigger an asthma attack when lying down at night. The excessive weight pushes up. Against the lungs and airways making breathing difficult, this condition may trigger asthma. Emotional stress does not only affect your mind and peace, it affects your body too. In more ways than we believe it does. Stress can induce you to eat out of control, or smoke more than a person normally does. Sleeping while under stress makes a person tighten his jaws and turn around and around in bed, waking feeling worst then when you went to sleep. Stress can and will trigger an asthmatic reaction too, and if you combine it with overweight the result can be devastating.
We can’t control the environment around us, we must live with it as is. But there a certain behaviors, like those mentioned above that should be avoided completely. A healthy diet including vegetables and fruit, and reducing fat and carbohydrates; will keep your body strong which in turn will benefit you by reducing the intensity of asthma attacks. A simple exercise plan will also benefit the asthmatic person by allowing his air lung capacity to increase allowing him to take in more air even if his airways are constricting.
Smoking is a dirty habit and it is totally unnecessary and tasteless. If you must go out at night, wear a cap, a hat anything that will protect you from the cold night air. Do not walk around the house barefooted on the cold floor. Take your medication on time every day. Follow your doctor’s instructions exactly. Small details that will not take any time away from your schedule can make great differences when you are trying to avoid asthma and its consequences.

An asthma attack can be a very painful experience: The person’s airways close up and they are physically incapable of breathing. The person makes great efforts to try t get air into his or her lungs but it just doesn’t happen. The chest rises and falls incessantly without result and the person feels that he is dying. Constant cough episodes, as the lungs struggle to open the airways and receive some air rack the chest area until it hurts. As the minutes go by the situation only worsens because the airways will continue closing until there is no air going through. The airways also fill with mucus in an attempt by the body to remove the foreign objects, which have caused the original reaction only help to narrow the air passages further.
In a severe asthma attack, without personal help or medical help the patient will suffer damages due to lack of oxygen. When an asthma attack is severe the person can be rendered helpless and incapable of medicating himself in fact eventually he will loose conscience due to lack of air. In a situation where this person is alone in the middle of an asthma attack, emergency medical attention must be received immediately because this person will probably die without it. There is no two ways about this, your daily medication will not reverse the asthma attack or stop it and home medication applied in a nebulizer will not stop it either. The nebulizer may help some while the emergency personnel arrive but it will not reverse the attack.
Asthma medications taken daily are designed to prevent symptoms, not to cure them. Having a nebulizer with prescribed medication at home will help and reverse mild attacks of asthma. If the person feels the symptoms coming on right after entering a room or some place, and he or she was feeling fine before entering this place; it is possible that the trigger allergen is inside the room or place and leaving immediately may reverse the symptoms back to normal. This applies to places where there are animals living, cats, dogs, hamsters, are examples of animals, which may induce allergic reactions. If this person has had negative reactions, coughing, sneezing or chest tightness in the presence of these animals it is most likely that he is allergic to one or all of them so stay away from them and places where they live.
Once the symptoms have started, taking another dose of your daily medicine will not help. It is too late for that, this is a preventive medication. The doctor should prescribe this person a medication to be used in case mild to medium attacks occur, the medications prescribed should be taken as the first symptoms flare up because it will take some time for it to have a full effect on the body. Time is of the essence when dealing with asthma because life and death are involved plus the fact that a fully fledged asthma attack can also be very painful and stressing.
Asthma is a disease which is easier to prevent than to deal with an attack, so attention to your environment and scheduled medication intakes are the best way to avoid difficult and painful consequences.

Asthma

Asthma is caused by two main factors, genetics and environment. Genetic asthma comes from the parents or one of them passing it to one or more of his or her children. Genetically produced asthma shows itself generally at a young age but sometimes disappears as the child goes into puberty due to hormonal changes in his or her body. Environmentally produced asthma can and will attack anyone, age, sex or ethnical background is not important. This asthma will not disappear ever, it may be controlled and the person may never suffer from an attack but it will always be there.
Children are greatly affected by environmental asthma too. Children who grow in large cities have greater probabilities to get asthma than country grown children, but the same goes for adults too. There are more than twenty million people of different ages, sex and ethnic background in the USA that suffer from asthma, of these six million are children that accounts for more than twenty five percent of the total. Considering that there are many more adults than children in the USA the probabilities are against the children.
Children are affected by genetic and environmentally produced asthma, adults can only be affected by environmental asthma; thus making children vulnerable to both causes of asthma. There are other factors which are backed by groups of doctors but which are under investigation which also can be applied here. Children who receive antibiotics at a young age are liable to become asthmatic due to their low self-defense capability. Children whose mothers received antibiotics while they were in the womb are also liable of suffering from respiratory diseases due to the same reason mentioned above. Another factor which is also important and affects many children in this day and age is obesity; obesity is considered a factor that will help asthma develop in any person. Pressure applied during sleep and while sitting on the airways and lungs by the accumulated fat weakens noticeably the airway walls making them prone to irritation and attacks by allergens. Children are also irresponsible, they roll around in the grass and dirt, run across a field of flowers or simply enjoy getting dirty adults are more aware of their surroundings and are alert to what may affect them and what wont.
O the other hand, adults have a greater percentage of obesity than children, adults are in greater contact and in closer contact than children with cigarette smoke and engine pollution while driving to and from work, and all types of man- made environmental hazards. They are allowed to smoke cigarettes or cigars, they are the ones who remove the allergens from houses and buildings, not children. They are already past the genetic affection of asthma and are only victims to environmental causes. Adults suffer greater degrees of emotional stress, another asthma trigger, than children who basically live carefree lives. No definite conclusions have been written and accepted on this matter regarding who is in greater danger to become asthmatic. But the fact is all groups, and every person is a possible candidate for asthma many times there is nothing you can do about it because you don’t control the environment but you can quit smoking, you can loose weight, you can exercise and eat properly.

The airways into the lungs have a group of muscles surrounding them; these muscles function, is to press and close the airways when a foreign substance enters them. By closing the airway and producing a cough, the foreign substance is expelled and it does not enter into the lungs. The lung’s job is to replenish the blood with oxygen, which is then distributed to the rest of the body. This is Nature’s way to protect the lungs. This is how it works in all of us.
The airways in a person who has asthma are never completely open. They are always inflamed and are very sensitive to certain substances, which produce an allergic reaction. This allergic reaction triggers the muscles into pressing on the airways thus cutting down the air passage.
There is no cure for asthma, even when the person feels fine and is breathing normally, the disease is still there waiting to strike. There are many factors which provoke an asthma attack and they affect each person in a different way. Being that there are so many different substances and allergens in the air, it is impossible to avoid all of them. Asthma is provoked by innumerable factors; even a change in temperature during the night can trigger a reaction or an attack. So it is very hard to prevent it. Permanent medication is required for a person suffering from asthma.
More than twenty million people suffer asthma in the United States alone and out of these, six million are children. Modern technology and constant research in medication and treatments allows them to live normal almost asthma free lives. The disease is always present but it is controlled by the medication and the precautions the person takes in avoiding situations he or she know will trigger an asthma attack. Asthma medication is designed to prevent the attacks, not to cure them. When an asthma attack has started normal medication is useless, many times it is necessary for the person to go to a hospital to be put in a nebulizer and injected to reopen his air passages. Extreme cases require hospitalization and oxygen to be forced into the lungs.
Even though there is no cure for asthma it can be controlled and managed in a way that the person leads a completely normal life. Medication must be taken every day, usually a pill or an inhaler which administers the exact dose the person requires. Special care and precautions are needed during the winter months when seasonal flu shows up because a cold can be complicated for a person suffering from asthma; it could trigger an asthma attack even if the person is taking his medication properly.
Springtime is also dangerous for the asthma patient; it is time to watch his medication and pay special attention to his surroundings. During this time many flowers are blooming and releasing their pollen into the air. There is spring-cleaning and many other activities producing dust and other particles that fly away in the air and may provoke an asthmatic reaction.

Asthma is a disease that affects the Respiratory System. The air passages to the lugs are blocked and the person has a hard time breathing. Severe asthma attacks can block the air passages completely leading to respiratory arrest if they go untreated. People diagnosed with asthma can be treated and live a normal life. They have to take preventive medication every day and take small precautions to avoid asthma flare ups but the fact is that more than twenty million people live with asthma daily in the USA and six million of these are children.
All these people go about their business daily, they go to school, work, play, they lead normal lives in much the same manner everybody else does. The only difference is that they have to take medication every day, which prevents their asthma from flaring up. They all use different kinds of medication taken in pills or inhalers, nothing fancy, nothing strange. They also have to take some precautions while going out at night and during cold weather so as to not induce an asthma attack. They must also stay away from food, and other elements that they are allergic to, this fact is determined by exhaustive allergy testing.
Asthma and exercise are still a controversy. Studies have shown that many athletes, including professional athletes suffer from asthma and it does not affect their performance while playing. Many regular people who like sports and exercise go to gymnasiums and exercise to their hearts content too. Some doctors claim that exercise especially strenuous exercise will cause the asthma to flare up and attack. Exercises like running, football, soccer, basketball, exercises that require continuous movement, exercises that require strength are believed by some doctors will cause an attack, in fact they believe that a person who has asthma does not have the same ability and resistance that a normal person does.
Other doctors believe that exercise is necessary for the asthma patient. They believe that exercise expands the size of your lungs and allows your lungs to take in more air. A programmed, gradually increasing plan is necessary to do this, and mane doctors will design this plan for the person and encourage him to follow it. This does not mean that they will eventually substitute their medication with exercise and the asthma will go away. No, asthma can’t be cured, only prevented from flaring up.
Exercise during an asthma attack, mild or severe is out of the question. It is even dangerous because the blood pressure is up and the body is burning calories but the lungs are not receiving enough air to feed the body and allow it to process all this burnt energy. Exercise at this time may increase the symptoms and escalate the attack into a greater danger and greater consequences. If an attack happens while exercising, it does not mean that the exercise provoked it, allergens and other circumstances provoke asthma, and there are no records or studies that indicate that exercise or exertion produces asthma.
Great athletes have suffered from it, even Olympic Champions have. There are no records or studies that indicate that exercise produces asthmatic reactions. Moderate exercise is recommended when starting but once the person has created and gotten used to an exercise routine, he or she should have no problems with his or her asthma.

HOW IS ASTHMA DIAGNOSED

Asthma

Asthma is a disease in which muscles put pressure on the airways and close them to avoid certain substances to enter the lungs. This is one of the normal functions for these muscles but when the person is asthmatic these muscles tend to react to specific substances or allergens to which they wouldn’t in a normal person. Airway constriction is very fast and aggressive and many times medical attention is required to reverse the condition.
When asthma is suspected on a patient the first thing that the doctor must do is check the family medical history. Asthma can be passed on from parents to children. It does not necessary appear, or flare up at a young age, it may take many years even all the way to adulthood before it shows symptoms. Identifying and diagnosing the disease may take a little time and will require a close watch on the patient’s environment and activities to discover and isolate the trigger which produces the reaction.
There are many, many different reasons or causes that will trigger an asthmatic reaction and there are also other diseases that resemble an asthma attack but they aren’t. This is especially difficult to determine in children because one of the recommended tests for adults, a pulmonary function test, is not recommended neither for children nor for sick elderly people due to the exhaustion and stress it produces on the respiratory system. During this test, histamine is introduced in the body to provoke the closing of the airways and an antihistamine is introduced afterwards to relieve the symptoms. This process is done several times to verify the results and this can be exhausting and drain a lot of energy from the patient.
Radiological exams, such as chest X-rays and a CT scan are performed to rule out any other possible respiratory condition. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease symptoms can be confused with asthma symptoms. Acid reflux, which is a digestive disorder, can also trigger a reaction similar to asthma symptoms. Care must be taken while diagnosing asthma because the patient may be given medicines that are not going to solve his problems and may react negatively to them.
Observation of the patient in his or her natural environment is absolutely necessary to determine the existence of asthma. There are certain events or things the person comes in contact with that trigger the reaction. For example, the person may be allergic to cats hair, if so, when he or she is with a cat or in a house where a cat lives a reaction will be triggered and this person will begin coughing and losing his breath. During spring pollens are released into the air by many different plants and many people are affected or are allergic to one or more of these, thus an asthmatic reaction is seen.
Dust, pollen, animal hairs, chocolate, certain foods, there are many factors which will affect any given individual so once the doctor has determined that the patient is asthmatic allergy test must follow. These tests are performed at the doctor’s office and they are performed over a short period of time. The patient is injected under the skin with preparations of pollens from different flowers and grass, different types of dust, different types of foods, many, things. When the person is in fact allergic to a specific shot a small red rash will show and depending of the size and reaction of the skin to the shot the doctor will determine if the allergy to this substance exists and how bad it is. This is a slow tedious process but it is the safest and most conclusive way to determine allergies. Once the doctor has a clear picture of the allergies the person has he can determine what the correct medication for the person is. There are many allergy medications available on the market and most of them apply to specific affections so care must be taken to test for allergies thoroughly. The person diagnosed with asthma will then have to take a medicine for his allergies along with another which will take some of the sensitivity out of his air way muscles allowing him to lead a normal life and be able to go outdoors without the danger of an asthma attack.

Asthma

Asthma is basically an allergic reaction, which causes the muscles surrounding the airways to constrict them to stop the flow of air into the lungs. This is done by the muscles to avoid foreign matter to enter the lungs. Many things can trigger this muscular reaction and they differ from one person to the other. Individuals suffering from asthma must always be aware of their surroundings to avoid triggering a reaction.
Allergy tests are also a must for them. In order to avoid something you must know what it is you must avoid. Allergy tests reveal the environmental factors that trigger allergic asthmatic reactions. Environmental factors like pollens, dust, animal hairs and many other substances found in the air will cause allergic reactions. A person suffering of asthma must have treatment for his allergies and for the asthma too. You cannot effectively prevent asthma attacks if you are not caring for your allergies.
Climate changes are usual asthma triggers. Proper precautions must be taken, wear a sweater, wear a cap or hat. If it is too cold wear a scarf. Try not to sit out in the open at daybreak or nightfall. Prolonged exposure to the night air without protection can also provoke asthma. Of course night swims in the ocean or pool are not recommended either even if it is warm. The temperature change between the water and the air may trigger a reaction.
Stay alert; there are sometimes foods that after eating them you start sneezing or coughing. You may be allergic to these or some component of it. Sometimes you walk into a friend’s house and the sneezing and coughing begins; it doesn’t have to be much, a couple of sneezes or coughs but you weren’t coughing or sneezing before you arrived, that means something in that environment is affecting.
There are special medicines prescribed for the prevention of asthma attacks. These are medications that prevent, up to a certain point; that your airways close up. If they prevented this from happening completely a person could inhale the allergens he is allergic to in great quantities and go into shock and possibly die. These medications help to control minor affections and keep the respiratory system working but they will not stand up to a massive allergen attack. They must be taken everyday at the same hour because their effect is accumulative, not curative. Taking two doses today because you forgot yesterdays dose does not work, protection and dosage must be applied daily for it to have the best effect on the system.
Once the asthma attack is in progress they do not work anymore, in case of a severe attack the person must seek medical attention immediately. A severe asthma attack can and will result in death if it is not treated immediately. Millions live normal lives everyday suffering from asthma, it is just a matter of discipline with medications, attention to the environment around you and the common sense to stay away from situation that you believe might compromise your health.

When the disease has been diagnosed the physician will have to determine the correct dose of insulin to be injected for Type 1 diabetes patients plus a diet and exercise plan. The same will happen to the Type 2 diabetes patient; in this case medication may not be necessary. Insulin injection is not required by Type 2 patients, but a regular diet and exercise is necessary.
In either case regular checkups are necessary and a strict application and medication control is a must. Diabetes is a benign disease while under control but it is very aggressive when left unchecked. If a patient fails to take his medication for several days, symptoms will start to show. The first of these is a lack of desire and energy to do the most basic physical activities. In males, impotence is one of the first signs that diabetes is settling in, especially if this condition has not been diagnosed before.
Lack of concentration and attention are other signs of a diabetic crisis on the way. Blurred vision while watching TV or reading, and lack of focus are also to be taken seriously; if not attended these can advance to a permanent lack of focus and blurriness. In serious case will evolve to a total loss of vision in one or both eyes. The high amounts of glucose in the blood cause excessive pressure inside the eye that ruptures vital organs which allow vision. The blurriness and lack of focus are signs of the same rise of pressure within the eye but in smaller amounts.
After several days of an uncontrolled diabetic crisis, the patient will feel extreme unquenchable hunger and thirst. No amount of food or water will help, dizziness spells will start and all the other conditions mentioned above will get worst. These dizziness spells will happen anywhere and at any time but they will show up specially if the patient is exerting himself or attempting some physical task. It does not have to be extreme, walking or getting out of bed will produce weakness and dizziness spells.
By then a deep depression will settle in and the patient will refuse to get out of bed. Sometimes he or she will also prefer the curtains to be drawn in the bedroom to keep the light out. The patient will sleep most of the day and night and will lack the strength to even feed himself. These are advanced symptoms of danger and medical attention must be provided immediately to stop them.
Finally weakness, depression, and the excess of insulin in the blood stream will make all systems collapse. The person will faint and go into a comma. He will experience liver and kidney failure, these depending on the amount of damage caused by the insulin may be permanent and he will require dialysis for the rest of his life. Due to the excess of glucose the blood pressure will rise in the body and heart arrest is a possibility. The fact that the heart does not have enough strength to irrigate the limbs properly may cause infections and damage to the blood vessels which will require limb amputation.
The diabetic person can live a normal life but he must always be aware of small changes in his body that may be alarms going off. These may not be dangerous at first; he may need a change a greater dose of insulin or medication. He may have abused his body during the weekend and doesn’t feel right. Many things may provoke these small signs and symptoms; awareness is the key to success against diabetes.

There are more than seven million diabetics in the USA alone. Basically diabetes is a disease by which the body is not able to process the glucose in the blood and turn it into energy. Insulin is produced by the pancreas; insulin is the hormone that breaks glucose down into carbohydrates the body can burn. There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 occurs when the person does not produce enough insulin in his body to process the glucose in the bloodstream. Type 2 Diabetes happens when the body produces the insulin but it is not capable of processing the glucose.
The most common type of diabetes is Type 2; around 90% of all diabetics suffer from Type 2 diabetes while the remaining 10% suffers from Type 1. The only available treatment for Type1 diabetes is to get daily insulin injections. Insulin can’t be taken orally because it would be destroyed by the acids in the stomach. If for some reason the insulin survives the stomach acids it will definitely not make it through the intestinal track and into the blood.
The amount of insulin required by the patient is determined by the physician through basically a test and error process. The amount of insulin required by each person’s system is different and there are no established measures. The amount of insulin prescribed to anyone will depend on his or her reaction to each application. Generally one shot a day is required, usually into a fatty area of the body, for example the belly. In advanced cases more than one shot may be necessary.
Diabetes does not advance, what we mean by advanced is that it was detected too late and there is already damage to certain organs. Diabetes under medical control and proper eating habits does not change, does not advance it remains as is. On the other hand if the person does not follow his or her treatment and does not follow the diet plan designed, this person may suffer severe consequences to his internal organs, liver, pancreas and kidneys; and may also loose limbs or go blind. Uncontrolled diabetes is extremely dangerous.
Treatment is easy and uncomplicated once the correct insulin dosage is determined by the physician. The patient must make sure to get his shot with the recommended frequency and the correct dosage. He must be very aware of his food intake, both in quality and quantity. The patient must also follow the exercise program design for him or her; these are not anything out of this world. A half an hour walk in the garden or nearby park is enough to help keep diabetes under check and control. Many people live with Type 1 diabetes perfectly normal lives and have no activity or food ingestion restriction.
There is no cure for diabetes, there is only control. Today people with Type 1 diabetes have a new mechanical aid. It is a small practical machine about the size of a cellular phone which automatically injects the correct dosage of insulin into the patient. The needle is permanently located in the patient’s abdominal area and he or she does not have to worry about the time or the place to get his or her shot. This is a very practical and reliable gadget that goes unnoticed and will also save the patient from the daily pinch of the needle.
