Yeast infections are common and as a result there are many home remedies. A yeast infection may occur in women, but it can affect men too and in various parts of the body including the toes, underarms, and the vagina in women. Yeast infections are not serious, however they can be uncomfortable and include a burning and itching sensation.

Yeast, Candida fungus, is minute in size and they naturally are found on the human body. When their numbers grow out of control a yeast infection results. Generally, the body’s acidity level keeps yeast in check. However, there are certain situations that may allow the yeast to grow uncontrollably including pregnancy, menstruation, birth control pills, and or diabetes.

Yeast Infection Symptoms

Itching and burning in the vagina
The most common symptoms are burning and itching that may start out mild and become very uncomfortable.
Swelling, itching, and burning around the skin surrounding the vagina.
The vulva, skin around the vagina, may become ultra sensitive to contact and swell and itch.

Vaginal discharge
Vaginal discharge is common and it is usually thick, white, and odourless. It may even have a cottage cheese appearance.

Pain during sexual intercourse
During sexual intercourse it is possible for there to be significant discomfort and pain.

Burning sensation during urination
During urination there will be a burning sensation and it will likely persist afterwards.

Reduced body immunity levels
If your body’s immune system is not up to par then it is possible for it to succumb to yeast infections.

Antibiotics
Yeast infections may also occur after taking some antibiotics.

Stress
Yeast levels may also increase due to physical and/or mental stress.

Birth Control Pills
Birth control pills can increase the odds of yeast infections.

Menstrual Periods
Menstrual cycles may allow yeast to grow unchecked and it will become an infection.

Diabetes
In some cases, diabetics will experience more yeast infections.

Home remedies for Yeast Infection

Home remedy using Yogurt
A home remedy that works is to dip a tampon in yogurt and insert it into the vagina. Then, a few hours later repeat with a new tampon and yogurt sample. Continue this until the day after your symptoms have resolved.
